National Seminar on Soil Health Management and Food Security: Role of Soil Science Research and Education

Dr. Sudarshan Dutta, Deputy Director, IPNI South Asia, and the Indian Society of Soil Science Kolkata Chapter jointly organized the National Seminar on "Soil Health Management and Food Security: Role of Soil Science Research and Education," held in Kolkata, October 8-10. The successful event, which coincides with the 2015 International Year of Soils, featured 13 distinguished speakers and nearly 200 participants including scientists, extension professionals, industry agronomists, and farmers. Respected soil scientist Dr. D. L. N. Rao from the Indian Institute of Soil Science (ICAR), Bhopal, delivered the Prof. S. K. Mukherjee Memorial Lecture.

The poster session included more than 70 presentations. The first two days featured interactive presentations on different issues of soil health including Soil Health Management - Present Status and Future Need, Management of Soil Organics, Climate Change Mitigation, Soil Degradation and Management, and Field Studies Research outcomes. The third day of the seminar included a farmer and scientist session where Nutrient Expert was highlighted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) scientists of Eastern India, who have conducted trials under the supervision of ICAR and the Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute.
