Jammu & Kashmir - Region Profile
The total geographical area of the state of Jammu and Kashmir is nearly 22.2 million hectare and it has a total population of 12.5 million which is approximately 1.04% of the national total. Jammu and Kashmir's economy is predominantly dependent on agriculture and allied activities. Agricultural exports from Jammu and Kashmir include rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, barley, millet, vegetables, apples, cherries, oranges, peaches, pears and saffron, Table 1 illustrates the current area, productivity and production statistics of major crops in Jammu and Kashmir.
Nutrient consumption in Jammu and Kashmir in the past decade is given in Fig. 2. The consumption of total fertilizer nutrients in the state increased by 4.4% from a total of 109.7 thousand MT during 2012-13 to 114.5 thousand MT during 2013-14. N consumption at 74.2 thousand MT during 2013-14 slipped marginally by 2.2% over 2012-13. The consumption of P2O5 at 30.1 thousand MT and K2O at 10.3 thousand MT during 2013-14 recorded increase of 24.8% and 5.2%, respectively, over the previous year. NPK use ratio changed from 7.8:2.5:1 during 2012-13 to 7.2:2.9:1 during 2013-14. Per hectare consumption of total nutrients increased from 94.5 kg during 2012-13 to 98.6 kg during 2013-14. Using the area and production of major crops, the total nutrient (N, P2O5 and K2O) removal by each crop was calculated and a nutrient balance sheet was prepared (table 2).
