Haryana- Region Profile

The state of Haryana has a total geographical area of 4.421 million hectare and a population of 25.3 million. It is located between 27°39' to 30°35' N latitude and between 74°28' and 77°36' E longitude. Haryana is also one of the most economically developed regions in South Asia and its agricultural and manufacturing industry has experienced sustained growth since 1970s. Despite recent industrial development, Haryana is primarily an agricultural state. About 70% of residents are engaged in agriculture. Wheat and rice are the major crops grown here. Haryana is self-sufficient in food production and the second largest contributor to India's central pool of food grains. The main crops of Haryana are wheat, rice, sugarcane, cotton, oilseeds, pulses, barley, maize, millet etc. Table 1 illustrates the current area, productivity and production statistics of major crops in Haryana.

Nutrient consumption in Haryana in the past decade is given in Fig. 2. The consumption of total fertilizer nutrients in Haryana declined by 10.3% from 1.350 million MT during 2012-13 to 1.211 million MT during 2013-14. The total nutrient consumption declined in Kharif by 16.3% and in Rabi by 5.7% over the corresponding seasons of the previous year. Kharif: Rabi share in total fertilizer consumption changed from 43:57 during 2012-13 to 41:59 during 2013-14.

On nutrient basis, the consumption of N at 0.997, P2O5 at 0.199 and K2O at 0.016 million MT during 2013-14, declined by 2.6%, 35.9% and 6.4% respectively, over 2012-13. NPK use ratio changed from 61.4:18.7:1 during 2012-13 to 64:12.8:1 during 2013-14. The per hectare consumption of total fertilizer nutrients declined from 208.1 kg during 2012-13 to 186.7 kg during 2013-14. Using the area and production of major crops, the total nutrient (N, P2O5 and K2O) removal by each crop was calculated and a nutrient balance sheet was prepared (table 2).
